Remembering Brian Hunt

April 9, 2021

The Canadian Public Accountability Board (CPAB) is saddened to hear of the passing of our past CEO, Brian Hunt. Our thoughts are with Brian’s family in this very difficult time.

Brian Hunt was a founding member of CPAB and served as chief executive from 2009 to 2018. A leader in our industry, Brian helped build a new era of audit regulation in Canada by shaping CPAB’s inspection approach and maintaining a steadfast commitment to enhancing audit quality.

Prior to his time at CPAB, Brian was President and CEO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO), and held numerous executive positions in not-for-profit and for-profit organizations, including the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), Hayward Industrial Products Inc. and PHH Canada.

Brian’s distinguished career is capped by his tremendous contributions to the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators (IFIAR). Alongside his duties as IFIAR’s Chair, Brian was instrumental in establishing the organization's first board, three-year strategic plan and permanent secretariat in Tokyo, Japan. As a result of his strong stewardship IFIAR has become the leading international organization on audit quality.

Brian was a mentor to many and will be remembered for his warmth and sense of humor. We are grateful for and honor Brian’s legacy and his immense contributions to the audit profession in Canada and around the world.
